Photographed By: Rachel Maucieri | Updated Studio Space: Matine, DC Artist
This is such a special post because Carolyn was our very first artist to feature on Made with Love! You can see that full feature right here! Carolyn moved into a new studio space over the summer and we got to go peek around and snap a few photos. We thought as we approach our one year mark we would give you all a little bit of an update on Carolyn and what all is in store for Matine in the new year!
What is necessary for you in making your space inspiring?
I find it most difficult to be inspired when the studio is too crowded or if I'm surrounded in chaos. It’s important to me to strike a balance of calm, negative spaces with high functioning production areas that can (and do) become a complete disaster. My creative process needs a little room to breathe, so I never want to fill every square inch with things. The luxury of this new studio is that there is enough room to allow for all of our workspace and materials without feeling overwhelmed and crowded.
The other necessities for me are light, a solid plant collection and plenty of ways to display our work. I love being able to hang the bags up, play with color palettes and surround myself in current and previous pieces to inspire new ideas.
What is your favorite thing about your new studio?
It’s a tie between the giant skylight and the location. Light has such an impact on our moods each day, and I think working in a dark space can really take a toll. Sitting at my desk under this big stream of sun is a small thing, but completely delightful.
Our location on Capitol Hill also couldn’t be better. It’s not too far from my house, so I’m able to walk to work, visit our dog in the middle of the day, quickly drop by the studio if I need to do something in the evening, etc.—it's a million tiny things that really add up to a better quality of life and a bit more balance.
What are you looking forward to for 2017?
I’m SO excited for 2017. The past couple of years have been all about laying a foundation for growth like expanding the team, manufacturing, and moving into a bigger studio space. It has allowed me to navigate successfully through big changes like the birth of my daughter, all while continuing to grow the business and working toward the best rhythm for managing all of these things. 2017 feels like the year we’ve finally found that rhythm and are ready to start executing everything on a new level. There are a bunch of exciting plans ahead—new products, collaborations and events in cities across the country, to name just a few!
