How did you get started?
Furniture making started out as a hobby where we only made pieces for friends and family. We both had comfy corporate jobs in the financial industry, but after doing the same thing for so many years, we just weren’t feeling fulfilled anymore. The rat race of Corporate America began to lose its appeal to both of us, and since we both loved to create, we thought we’d go for it. We opened an online store in 2012 and did our furniture making in the evenings and on weekends. Once we became so busy that we had no time to do anything other than work, we knew it was time to make some hard decisions. I quit my corporate job in December 2013 and Jessica followed about 9 months later.
What influences you? / Where do you get your inspiration?
There's an old saying that I'm sure you've all heard and it goes "they don't make things like they used to". We've taken it upon us to prove that statement wrong.
We use quality materials and have a solid construction process so that our pieces will last. We constantly look for fresh inspiration and new ideas. We're inspired by mid-century with a simplistic yet industrial aesthetic. We love to travel. We ask tons of questions. We bounce ideas off each other a lot. We also pay attention to what our customers are asking for. There is a whole host of things that go into our creative process. It doesn’t always turn out exactly as we expect, but that’s part of the beauty of creating.
How do you balance your personal time + work?
With having two little boys our family is top priority and balancing our time can be very difficult at times. We try to work a Monday-Friday work week as much as possible and spend the weekends hanging out with friends and family or traveling. Now that we have moved our wood shop and studio out of our house and into a separate location it has become much easier to quit at 5pm on Friday and really enjoy our weekends. We've found that by taking the time to relax and rejuvenate, we are much more efficient through the week.
What keeps you motivated?/ Why do you love doing this?
I would say it all boils down to passion and curiosity. When you are passionate about something, it’s amazing how motivated you are to keep going. Passion for life and good design.
We just really love what we do and are so grateful that we get to wake up and create every single day. When we get feedback from our customers saying that displaying their merchandise or even just jewelry on the fixtures and furniture that we've created for them has helped increase their sales, we get so excited! We love helping other people be successful. We also love creating pieces of timeless furniture that individuals can use in their homes for years to come.
Where do you see yourself in 2-5 years? / What’s next for your brand?
We hope we can continue to create unique and functional industrial furniture for both individuals and brands. We are also excited to continue expand our brand to include quality home decor and supply items that complement our furniture and fixtures.
